CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: Zoro Roronoa
Age: 21
Canon:
One Piece

Canon point: During his two-year training

Personality:
Roronoa Zoro, infamously coined through his solo exploits as ‘The Pirate Hunter’, is a man on a mission. Dedicated, reserved, and a bit simple-minded, he may seem a bit thick-headed at times, but he lives his life for the sake of one very lofty goal, and remains completely unapologetic towards it. He remains a down-to-earth sort of guy just the same, and, no matter how much he may deny it, would gladly give up his own life to save any of his friends.

First and foremost, Zoro’s dream in life, what he has dedicated himself to with all his body, heart, and soul, is to become the world’s strongest/greatest swordsman. Nearly everything he does from day to day is to that end, a process that involves non-stop practice and absolutely inhuman training and conditioning – as a demonstration of his willpower and resolve, Zoro spends almost all of his available time doing this, using equipment weighing hundreds of pounds for hours at a time, and when he isn’t doing curls, squats, and vertical push-ups or honing his technique with a sword, he is napping, resting up just so he can be ready to start training again.

Now, all of this would seem rather superficial in and of itself – another man simply hoping to prove his macho strength to the world – but the truth is much more personal. Although it does demonstrate Zoro’s loyalty to his dreams and his personal discipline, the goal itself comes from a promise made to a childhood friend, that one of them would reach the top of the world one day. This dream is not only his, but his desire to see her dreams fulfilled as well.

Being somewhat gruff and abrasive when it comes to strangers, Zoro can be a hard man to get to know. At first, all one is ever given as an introduction is a glare, fierce and as overflowing with killing intent as any mortal could ever stand without falling dead on the spot. He is generally calm, reserved, and tends to mind his own business when lost in a crowd of strangers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much to earn his ire, either, and doing so will be followed by the slow and ominous sound of a sword being drawn from its sheathe.

This, however, is the face that Zoro shows to the world in hopes of keeping up a certain frightening image he seems to take great pride in – he likes being a wanted man, and finds it very satisfying when he learns that the bounty on his head has gone up in value. In reality, he is kind, if still a bit quiet and reserved, and always aims to do what is best for his friends and the crew as a whole. Even if he scolds them for letting their guard down, he will always rush into danger to protect his allies, even if it means suffering injury in the process.

Zoro lives by a simple sort of code of honor. This code of his can’t be clearly defined, as it mostly resolves around his mood at the moment, but it primarily pertains to his role and pride as a swordsman; for example, he has no desire to fight someone ‘weaker’ than himself, but he will show respect for their determination. He may also refuse to strike someone unarmed, or dishonorably attack them while their back is turned. Additionally, Zoro shows no remorse for his decisions, and he expects others to do the same, accepting whatever consequences come as a result.

Of course, in a series like One Piece, no character would be complete without a few comical faults. As for Zoro, he is perpetually forced to play the straight-man while surrounded by odd-balls – no matter how calm he normally is, their silly and frustrating actions often provoke exaggeratedly annoyed reactions from him. Not that he is above being a bit silly himself all of the time, though; his own brand of impracticality is a bit more straight-laced, but he may make a completely outlandish suggestion and do it with a straight face (for example: one of the crew members, frightened when faced by a giant octopus that threatens to destroy their ship, asks “What are we going to do!?”, Zoro may simply reply, “…sashimi does sound pretty good right now.”) On top of this, Zoro’s personal tragic fault is that the man has absolutely no sense of direction whatsoever and remains oblivious to this fact. He can and will get lost at any opportunity, no matter what kind of direction or the benefit of signs he may have.
